Rebuilding Bankline for mobile

Bankline Mobile: two phones showing the dashboard and the cashflow wheel, next to the NatWest logo.

NatWest Bankline is the platform UK businesses use to move billions every day, built for the desktop. I designed Bankline Mobile: the same control over cash, payments and forecasting, redrawn for a phone and the way owners actually work.

Highlights

  • Designed Bankline Mobile from the ground up
  • A customisable dashboard of widgets each business chooses
  • Open banking sync from Sage, Xero and QuickBooks
  • Cash flow forecasting and clear data visualisation
  • Payment approvals, on the move
The customisable dashboard: widgets for balance, cash flow, payments to approve, latest money in and alerts.

The dashboard

A dashboard each business builds for itself.

Every business watches different numbers, so the home screen is theirs to shape. A balance wheel, cash flow, payments to approve, the latest money in: each one is a widget that can be switched on, reordered and resized. One product that fits a sole trader and a finance team equally.

The best dashboard is the one each owner would have built themselves.

Open banking

One view, pulled from every tool they use.

Owners already run on Sage, Xero and QuickBooks, so Bankline connects to them through open banking and pulls the picture together. Unpaid invoices, direct debits and the next seven days land in one place, each block showing exactly where it came from. Forecasting stops being a spreadsheet job.

Open banking: connect Sage, Xero and QuickBooks, the seven-day forecast, and the dashboard settings.

Data visualisation

Making cash legible at a glance.

Cash flow is a story of timing, so the charts lead with it. The cashflow wheel splits money in from money out, candlesticks show the week, and a balance line reads the trend. Numbers an owner can act on between meetings.

Data visualisation: the cashflow wheel, candlestick charts and balance-trend lines.

Outcomes

Shipped. Built to grow.

Bankline Mobile shipped to real business customers, moving the desktop platform's core jobs onto the phone. The customisable, open-banking-connected dashboard gave NatWest a mobile product owners could make their own. A twenty-year-old platform, redrawn for how businesses bank now.

More work

The through line: serious tools made genuinely approachable, nowhere more than for seven million learners.
